First, the Investigative Committee on Social and Scientific Issues for the Post-K Computer established the “Post-K Computer Priority Research Application Development” Themes: Priority Issue (5): Development of new fundamental technologies for highly efficient generation, conversion, storage, and utilization of energy. Priority Issue (7): Creation of new functional devices and high-performance materials to support next-generation industries. Second, the Professional Development Consortium for Computational Materials Scientists was initiated through JST’s Building of Consortia for the Development of Human Resources in Science and Technology program.

Following the launch of these new projects, the Institute for Materials Research at Tohoku University, the Institute for Solid State Physics at the University of Tokyo, and the Institute for Molecular Science at the National Institutes of Natural Sciences, decided to launch the “Supercomputing Consortium for Computational Materials Science (SCCMS)” to support large-scale projects in which these three fields overlap and are oriented toward parallel computing. The Consortium additionally aims to encourage further efforts to advance parallel computing within the research communities of each of these fields. In addition, to achieve this goal during the 5-year term that began in FY2020, our goal is to support the promotion of large-scale computational materials science projects by providing computational resources and exchanging information about computational technology and results.

Accordingly, in 2016 the Center established the “SCCMS Quota” to set aside approximately 10% of the Center’s computing resources for the promotion of these research projects.

Computational resources

System B (DELL PowerEdge C6525/R940 )

System C (HPE Apollo 2000 Gen10 Plus/HPE Apollo 6500 Gen10 Plus)

Target Research Projects

1.
