About application classes
Details of application classes and usage patterns
A joint usage application is required to use the supercomputers at the ISSP. Usage quotas are divided into classes (A, B, C, D, E, and S) according to the period and usage amount, therefore please specify your preferred class in the application.
Applicants can submit as many as two applications each term; however, applications with similar research contents should be combined into one.
- If applying only for Class B, up to two proposals may be submitted.
- If applying for Class C or E, one proposal can be submitted along with another Class B proposal for contents that cannot be combined into a single research proposal.
Additional information about the systems is available on the About the Systems page (System B ohtaka、System C kugui).
Additional information on the point consumption criteria is provided on the Point Consumption System page.
Application Class | Application Acceptance Period | Usage Period | Application Point Limit (see below for details) | |
---|---|---|---|---|
System B | System C | |||
A (light usage) | At any time | Until the end of the fiscal year | 100 points or less | 50 points or less |
B (low usage) | Twice a year (June, December) | Until the end of the fiscal year | 650 points or less | 100 points or less |
C (medium usage) | Twice a year (June, December) | Until the end of the fiscal year | 6,500 points or less | 500 points or less |
D (Emergency) | At any time | For 6 months after approval | 10,000 points or less | 500 points or less |
E (heavy usage) | Twice a year (June, December) | Until the end of the fiscal year | 20,000 points or less | 1,500 points or less |
S (Special) | Twice a year (June, December) | 1 year | 10,000 points or more | No upper/lower limit |
A (light) (Sample Application Form)
Applications are accepted at any time and can be used until the end of the fiscal year following approval. Only one application per term is allowed for this class. Please note that, applications from Principal Investigators (groups) who are already using classes other than A will not be accepted.
B (low) (Sample Application Form)
Applications for the first term close in early December and in early June for the second term. Both provide joint usage either from April 1st or October 1st to the end of the fiscal year.
We accept multiple applications for this class. Additionally, applications for the second term are accepted even if the application for the first term has already been approved.
C(medium) (Sample Application Form)
Applications for the first term close in early December and in early June for the second term. Both provide joint usage either from April 1 or October 1 to the end of the fiscal year. Please note that multiple applications for this class assignment from one Principal Investigator (group) are not accepted. Please note that concurrent applications to both class C and E are not accepted.
However, despite the restriction on multiple applications, the first and second terms are considered independently. Therefore, it is possible to apply for the second term even if the application for the first term has been accepted.
<Examples of Acceptable Applications>
(Example 1) Apply for class C in the first term. Then apply for class C in the second term too.
(Example 2) Apply for class C in the first term. Then apply for class E in the second semester.
(Example 3) Apply for class E in the first term. Then apply for class C in the second semester.
D (Emergency)(Sample Application Form)
This class is for projects where remarkable research progress urgently requires the performance of large-scale calculations. Applications are accepted at any time and can be used for 6 months, following approval. Note that this period can extend beyond the end of the fiscal year. As a general rule, applications that are less urgent, such as projects that are simply a continuation of previous projects and projects where the schedule for thesis/dissertation defense is the main reason for urgency, are not accepted. “Urgency” is classified into three categories. Applicants who wish to utilize the “Job Priority System” under “Urgency 2” must indicate their motivations in the application.
Urgency 0:
Considered to be a class D project lacking significant urgency (not accepted)
Urgency 1:
Applications for computations that are highly urgent and cannot wait for the semi-annual application period
Urgency 2:
Research deemed to be of particularly high importance and, in addition to the “Urgency 1” criteria above, includes a requirement for utilizing the “job priority system” to perform calculations on an urgent basis.
E (heavy) (Sample Application Form)
Applications for the first term close in early December and in early June for the second term. Both provide joint usage either from April 1 or October 1 until the end of the fiscal year. The technical aspects of large-scale computations (speed, parallelization, etc.) are also evaluated. Please note that multiple applications for this class assignment from one Principal Investigator (group) are not accepted. Please note that concurrent applications to both class E and C are not accepted.
However, despite restriction on multiple applications, the first and second terms are considered independently. Therefore, it is possible to apply for the second term even if the application for the first term has been accepted.
<Examples of Acceptable Applications>
(Example 1) Apply for class E in the first term. Then apply for class E in the second term too.
(Example 2) Apply for class C in the first term. Then apply for class E in the second semester.
(Example 3) Apply for class E in the first term. Then apply for class C in the second semester.
S (Special)(Sample Application Form)
This class is intended to provide focused support for particularly important problems in the field of condensed matter research using computational physics, as well as those involving large-scale calculations. An unlimited number of application points may be used (System B has a lower limit on application points). Applications for the first term close in early December and in early June for the second term. Both provide joint usage for a full year, starting either from April 1 or October 1t. For proposals in this class, the Principal Investigator will be required to present the proposal at the Supercomputer Joint Usage Committee meeting.
